Conversions and sales is the end result you want from the visitors to your website.
Don’t assume your visitors know how to navigate on a website. If someone sees that your content is running off the monitor screen, they’ll just click away and go somewhere else. Many people who visit your website are not computer oriented, They don’t know how to set up their computer, and how to navigate on the screen. I’ve gotten a few comments about this from visitors. For example, many people wrote, “Your website seems to be running off the screen in Internet Explorer.” After checking the site in Internet Explorer, this was not the case. However, the problem was something else entirely.
Never lose conversions and sales – Educate people
Often times, other people’s computers are not set up the same way as yours may be. What’s really bad is, they don’t know it. They surf the web, and make a decision based on what they see in front of them.
I found this out by accident, just last night. I was talking to an old grade school friend of mine, and he asked me to email some pictures to him. The picture files were too large to email all at once, and breaking them down into several emails would have been a pain in the rear. I figured out another way to send them. I uploaded them, put them on a web page and emailed the link to him. Last night, he told me that he was on the webpage, and could only see half of the pictures. Immediately, I told him to press the “Control” and “Minus” buttons. He was then able to see the entire pictures. He said to me, “I didn’t know that.” Then, a scary thought hit me – Neither do the visitors to my website. No wonder my conversions and sales are not as high as I’d like them to be.
When it comes to conversions and sales, never assume
Never assume anything. In a moment, I’ll tell you why.
I assumed everyone who surfs the web knows that “control key + minus key” makes the page smaller. I also assumed they know that “control key + plus key” makes the page larger. I’ll never assume anything again. I’m not going to “assume” you know what happens when you assume, so I’ll just spell it out for you.
When you assume, you make an “ass” out of “u” and “me”. Therefore, ass-u-me spells assume.
Technicality with conversions and sales – corrected
If you’ll look at the top of this page, you’ll see what I’ve inserted. Someone who is very good at computer skills may ask, “Man, what do you take me for, a fool? You’re insulting my intelligence.” That may be, but most of the people who surf the web don’t know this. If these people land on your website, and can’t see everything, they’re gone in less than five seconds. If you’re selling products, you’re not just leaving money on the table. You’re flushing it down the toilet.
I’ll never let this problem cost me conversions and sales again. It’s one of the first images visitors see when they come here. Most of them, who would have come and gone in a matter of seconds, may stick around a little longer. If you have a website, by all means, post an image like this at the top. You’re free to copy and use mine if you like. Remember this – That little longer I just mentioned may put some money in your pocket now, and again in the future.
Never take conversions and sales for granted. What I’ve inserted above may seem ridiculous. But when it comes to conversions and sales, I’ll be ridiculous from now on.
